Early Life

Marina Diamandis was born Marina Lambrini Diamandis on October 10, 1985, in Brynmawr, Wales. She is the daughter of a Greek father and Welsh mother, and she has an older sister named Lafina. Marina's parents split up when she was 4 years old, and her father moved back to Greece. Diamandis has said that she was a tomboy and that her childhood was "simple and idyllic." Marina attended Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls, and she said of the school, "I sort of found my talent there… I was the one who always skived off choir, but I had an incredible music teacher who managed to convince me I could do anything." When she was 16, Diamandis decided to live with her father in Greece "to connect with [her] heritage and learn to speak the language." In Athens, she studied at St. Catherine's British Embassy School, earning an International Baccalaureate. After returning to Wales, she moved to Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire, England, with her mother. After teaching herself how to play piano and producing demos with GarageBand, she released her debut EP, "Mermaid vs Sailor," on MySpace in 2007.
