Early Life
Matthew Modine was born Matthew Avery Modine on March 22, 1959, in Loma Linda, California. His mother, Delores, was a bookkeeper, and his father, Mark, managed drive-in movie theaters. Modine grew up with six older siblings, and his brother Mark appeared in Matthew's 1992 film "Equinox." Modine's family lived in several different locations in Utah, and they later returned to California, settling in Imperial Beach. Matthew attended Mar Vista High School, graduating in 1977.

Modine made his TV debut in the 1982 "ABC Afterschool Special" episode "Amy & the Angel," and in 1983, he appeared in the films "Baby It's You," "Private School," and "Streamers." He played the title role in 1984's "Birdy," and in 1985, he starred as Louden Swain in "Vision Quest" and appeared in theMadonnamusic videos "Crazy for You" and "Gambler," which were from the film's soundtrack.
