Mithun Chakraborty was born as Gouranga Chakraborty on June 16, 1950 in Calcutta, India to Bengali Hindu parents Shanti and Basanta. After attending the Oriental Seminary, he went to Scottish Church College, from which he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. Chakraborty went on to attend the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. A Naxalite before getting into the film business, he left the movement after his only brother was killed by electrocution in a freak accident.

Film Career in the 1970s and '80s

In 1976, Chakraborty made his film debut in Mrinal Sen's Hindi-language drama "Mrigayaa," starring opposite Mamata Shankar in her own film debut. For his performance, he won the National Film Award for Best Actor, making him the first and only person in history to win that award for his debut film. Also in 1976, Chakraborty had a brief part in "Do Anjaane." He went on to make his Bengali film debut in 1978 in the blockbuster "Nadi Theke Sagare." The same year, Chakraborty starred in the Hindi-language hit "Mera Rakshak." He continued to star in numerous successful Hindi-language films over the subsequent years, including "Surakksha," "Taraana," "Patita," "Hum Paanch," and "Hum Se Badkar Kaun." Also successful was the 1981 Bengali-language film "Kalankini Kankabati."

Chakraborty reached his greatest level of fame yet in 1982, when he starred in such major hit films as "Shaukeen," "Taqdeer Ka Badshah," "Swami Dada," "Troyee," and "Disco Dancer." Particularly successful was "Disco Dancer," an international blockbuster that also became the first Indian film to gross ₹1 billion. Chakraborty went on to star in a plethora of further commercial successes throughout the remainder of the decade. Among them were "Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye"; "Hum Se Hai Zamana"; "Ghar Ek Mandir"; "Jagir"; "Kasam Panda Karne Wale Ki"; "Pyar Jhukta Nahin"; "Ghulami"; and "Swarag Se Sunder."
