Monte Lipman was born on August 20, 1964 on a military base in Kentucky as the eldest of nine siblings. His family was itinerant, and hitchhiked cross-country to settle in California when Lipman was ten years old. Following the divorce of his parents, Lipman spent time growing up in Malibu with his father and in Brooklyn with his mother. He moved with his father to Montclair, New Jersey at the end of the 1970s and attended Montclair High School, where he played baseball and football. Lipman went on to attend the University of Albany, where he continued playing football and also coordinated concert events. He graduated in 1986 with a degree in communication and rhetoric.

In 2000, Republic was acquired by Universal Music Group, and Lipman became the president of Universal Records.
