Early Years

Aristotelis Savalas was born on January 21, 1922, in Garden City, New York. Of Greek heritage, he was the second oldest of five children born to Nick Savalas and his wife Christina (Kapsalis). His father owned a restaurant, and his mother was an artist.

Savalas, who spoke Greek as a child, learned the English language in elementary school and later attended Cobbett Junior High School in Lynn, Massachusetts.

In 1940, Telly graduated from Sewanhaka High School, a public high school in Floral Park, New York. After graduation, he worked as a lifeguard at the beach until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1941. For the next two years, he served in Company C of the 12thMedical Training Battalion, 4thMedical Training Regiment in Camp Pickett, Virginia. He was discharged from the military with the rank of corporal after he was severely injured in a motor vehicle accident. Savalas later went on to attend the United States Armed Forces Institute, where he studied television and radio production. He also attended the School of General Studies at Columbia University in New York, which he graduated from in 1946 with a bachelor's degree in psychology.
