Early Life

Trixie Mattel was born Brian Michael Firkus on August 23, 1989, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Brian grew up in Silver Cliff, Wisconsin, with his mother and three siblings. Firkus is part Ojibwe; his maternal grandmother came from the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians' Bad River Band. Brian's abusive stepfather called him a "Trixie" whenever he acted feminine, which inspired him to later use the drag queen name "Trixie Mattel" ("Mattel" was inspired by his love for Barbie dolls). After Firkus' stepfather pointed a gun at his head and threatened to shoot him, Brian was sent to live with his grandparents at the age of 15. He was taught to play guitar by his grandfather, who was a country musician. After Firkus graduated from high school, he earned a BFA in musical theatre from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. He was introduced to drag when he attended an Oriental Theatre screening of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." His first drag performance took place at Milwaukee's LaCage NiteClub. In 2014, Brian attended beauty school, but he dropped out to compete on "RuPaul's Drag Race."

Mattel guest-starred on "American Horror Story: Roanoke" in 2016, and the following year, she released her debut album, "Two Birds," and the EP "Homemade Christmas."
